The stay

A home in the valley, an easel at the door

Roots n Rustle is a Himalayan Plein-Air homestay in the Kangra Valley. Painters stay with a local host and work outdoors from the house and the land around it.

More about the house, the hosts and the surroundings will be added here soon.

A painting day

Following the light

Plein-air days are shaped by the sun. This is how a day at a painting homestay tends to flow.

  1. Early light

Set up while the valley is still cool and the ridges are sharp against the sky.

  2. Morning session

The longest stretch of painting, while the shadows are still telling the shapes of the land.

  3. Midday rest

Flat light and heat: time to eat, rest and look again at the morning's work.

  4. Golden hour

The warmest, fastest-changing light of the day. Small panels, quick decisions.

  5. Evening

Studies laid out side by side, and talk about what the valley did today.
